Anthropic’s AI Designs Superior Quantum Circuits

Anthropic’s most advanced AI model has cracked a set of problems in quantum computing that took human researchers years to make progress on, completing the work in just over two days. The results, produced without any human involvement during the process, are being seen as a sign that AI is moving beyond answering questions and into territory where it can independently advance scientific research.

Quantum computers are a fundamentally different kind of machine from the laptops and phones we use daily. They use quantum effects such as superposition, entanglement and interference, which can provide advantages over classical computers for certain problems. The catch is that they are extraordinarily difficult to program.

Every instruction has to account for all possible outcomes at once, and nothing calculated along the way can simply be deleted. That forces designers into constant tradeoffs between how much memory a program uses and how many steps it takes to run. Shaving either figure down is painstaking, specialized work.

Anthropic gave its Mythos 5 model eight of these design challenges, covering areas including chemistry, materials science and cryptography. It described each problem in plain English, then left the model to work alone. Mythos 5 wrote its own code, received automated scores based on memory and processing efficiency, and kept revising until it had improved each result. When it was done, every one of its eight designs beat the best solutions human researchers had published.

Two results stood out: In a type of calculation central to internet security, Mythos 5 encountered an approach that experts had considered impractical on quantum hardware, because the standard approach generates too much data to store.

Instead of working around it, the model derived an entirely new set of mathematical rules from scratch, ones that no published research had previously identified. Those rules let it sidestep the storage problem entirely, cutting the processing requirement to one seventeenth of the previous best.

The second breakthrough involved an algorithm used in logistics and materials design, where the leading solution had been developed by Google. Mythos 5 decided the approach was wrong for quantum hardware and replaced its core engine with a different method.

That swap created a memory problem, so the model built its own testing program, ran it 403 million times, and used the results to calculate exactly how little storage space it actually needed. Its final design required one twelfth of the computing effort Google’s version had.

Quantum computers still face significant hardware limitations and are years from widespread practical use. What this research suggests is that AI can now accelerate the work of closing that gap, finding solutions in hours that human specialists have spent years pursuing, and potentially cutting the time to a functional quantum computer by a significant margin.

As more quantum computing enterprises like D-Wave Quantum Inc. (NYSE: QBTS) invest research resources with the singular mission of making quantum computing available commercially, the help provided by AI systems could prove to be invaluable.
