A viral video on social media platform TikTok is popularizing a quick and easy hand test that can reportedly reveal if someone has an undiagnosed brain tumor. The British medic who demonstrated the 30-second test on the TikTok account claims that it can help individuals identify serious brain health issues that haven’t been diagnosed yet.
In a video clip that has since been viewed nearly 200,000 times, the user dubbed ‘Medifectious’ on TikTok demonstrated how to conduct the simple test using your hands to detect potential brain tumors. According to the doctor, the process involves placing your hands together, with the bottom hand palm up and the top hand palm down on top of it.
You then flip the top hand to show the palm, quickly flip it back, and rapidly repeat the motion for a few seconds before switching hands. The aim of this rapid palm-up and palm-down movement is to detect signs of dysdiadochokinesia, a condition that impairs an individual’s ability to perform alternating movements quickly.
The presence of dysdiadochokinesia in a seemingly healthy person could indicate dysfunction in the cerebellum, the part of the brain responsible for coordination. This dysfunction might be caused by nerve damage or a tumor pressing against the cerebellum.
One TikTok user recorded her boyfriend struggling to complete the test in a video that has since gained over a million views. She confirmed in the video description that he currently has a brain tumor. The user noted that he was diagnosed about three years ago and has been unable to remove the tumor due to its slow growth and limited access to neurosurgical treatment.
Medifectious, the user who originally posted the brain tumor test video, notes that everyone should be able to perform the motion. Some brain tumor patients may be able to complete the test with one hand but not the other, depending on how the tumor affects their coordination.
Generally, dysdiadochokinesia can result from a variety of conditions, including brain lesions, tumors, and neurological diseases such as multiple sclerosis. Although the test’s effectiveness hasn’t been clinically verified, it highlights the value of early detection for potentially life-threatening conditions like brain cancer.
An early brain cancer diagnosis significantly improves treatment options and long-term survival rates. If someone struggles with this coordination test, it may be a sign of a deeper neurological issue, and seeking prompt medical evaluation is strongly recommended. Catching such symptoms early could make a life-saving difference.
With companies like CNS Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ: CNSP) heavily investing in developing viable alternatives to the existing brain cancer treatments, the growing public awareness about how to catch these diseases early provides opportunities for treatment to be started early and increase success odds.
