Artificial intelligence and a new generation of imaging tools are beginning to reshape breast cancer detection, moving the field toward earlier identification and more personalized screening recommendations. About one in eight women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime, but the five-year survival rate reaches 90% to 100% when caught early, making detection advances among the most consequential developments in the field.
Aashini Master, medical oncologist and High-Risk Breast Clinic director at UCLA Health, said AI is already being woven into the diagnostic workflow, helping radiologists read mammograms more accurately and flag cancers that might otherwise go undetected. Risk-based screening, tailored to each patient’s individual genetic profile and history rather than applied uniformly, is also expected to become standard practice in the coming years.
Three-dimensional mammography pushed out its flat predecessor around ten years ago and now serves as the standard tool at leading centers, producing sharper images and catching cancers earlier. Women classified as high risk, those facing an elevated lifetime probability of developing the disease or carrying a confirmed mutation in one of the relevant genes, follow a more intensive schedule. For this group, mammograms and MRIs rotate on a six-month cycle rather than running as a single annual test.
Contrast-enhanced mammography, one of two emerging techniques pushing detection further, delivers intravenous contrast dye during imaging. It exploits the mechanism that cancers use to build a dense blood supply that draws the agent toward them and makes tumors visible that standard scans might miss. The technique is not yet widely available but represents a meaningful step toward finding breast cancer earlier and at a more treatable stage.
Abbreviated breast MRI is the second emerging technique under study, aimed at shrinking the scan time required from today’s standard of around 30 to 45 minutes to something significantly shorter. Doing so would let centers screen more patients per day. It could also extend MRI access to women with extremely dense breast tissue who fall outside conventional high-risk criteria but may still benefit from more thorough imaging.
Over half of all women fall into the two denser tissue categories, a classification that carries an independent cancer risk beyond simply making tumors harder to spot on imaging, since denser tissue contains more of the cell types that turn cancerous. Annual mammograms remain the baseline for women with dense breasts and average overall risk, with ultrasound or MRI added when other factors are present.
Blood-based cancer detection is the furthest horizon on Master’s list of advances, still investigational but potentially transformative. Early-stage research is exploring whether blood tests could identify cancer signals before a tumor shows up on any imaging scan. Positive results would give clinicians a less invasive complement to existing screening tools and could eventually reach patients who face barriers to traditional mammography.
As these advances in breast cancer diagnosis become commonplace, a lot more women could benefit from the cutting-edge treatment approaches being developed by several companies like Calidi Biotherapeutics Inc. (NYSE American: CLDI).
