A recently published review of data from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has revealed that the majority of new energy capacity the U.S. gained in the first half of the year was from renewables.
Conducted by the SUN DAY Campaign, the review showed that the U.S. experienced notable growth in the renewable energy sector despite persistent efforts by the Trump administration to derail American clean energy. Wind and solar now produce close to a quarter of America’s total utility-scale energy capacity, making renewables an increasingly important part of the country’s energy landscape.
Solar made up over 80% of all new energy projects in June alone, representing the 22nd consecutive month that solar surpassed all other sources of energy in terms of new capacity. According to the report, America’s green energy pipeline has remained surprisingly resilient to the Trump administration’s anti-green energy stance.
While the Biden administration passed numerous pro-renewable policies and invested billions of dollars in electric cars, renewable energy, and a public charging network, President Trump has rolled back dozens of the previous administration’s climate-action related policies, accelerated the expiration of key green energy tax subsidies, and instructed states to cease using federal funds to construct public electric vehicle charging stations. This has injected significant volatility into America’s green energy landscape and put it at risk of being eclipsed by competitors like China and the EU in the long term.
Even so, the renewable energy supply chain remained resilient for the first half of the year, adding more new capacity to the U.S. grid compared to fossil fuels between January and May 2025, after which the GOP administration passed the Big Beautiful Bill and essentially eliminated tax credits for green energy projects.
President Trump’s administration also sent several stop-work orders to various wind projects across the country in the months after the time period analyzed in the SUN DAY Campaign report, putting a damper on hopes for long-term growth in the wind energy sector.
Meanwhile, Solar Energy Industries Association senior vice president of communications Stephanie Bosh notes that solar energy is “stepping up” to meet the surging demand for reliable and affordable energy in America despite the current administration’s apparent vendetta against clean energy. A whopping 63 solar energy projects generating a cumulative 2,439 megawatts (MW) of clean energy came online in June alone, and they contributed to over 81% of all the country’s new energy generating capacity for the first half of the year.
Solar added 14,567 MW of new capacity in H1 2025, followed by wind at 3,139 MW, and natural gas at 1,727 MW. Wind and solar energy cumulatively account for close to a quarter of America’s generating capacity at the utility scale, with solar and wind contributing 11.3% and 11.8% respectively. Combined with geothermal, biomass, and hydropower, renewables now contribute to more than 30% of the country’s generating capacity.
The resilience exhibited by the shift to renewables in the U.S. suggests that private-sector players like PowerBank Corporation (NASDAQ: SUUN) (Cboe CA: SUNN) (FRA: 103) still have a large addressable market despite the headwinds coming from the policy reversals of the federal administration.
