Research published in the journal Nature Medicine has revealed that experimental immunotherapy may provide some relief to patients with aggressive pediatric cancers. Spinal cord and brain tumors tend to have the most detrimental effects on pediatric patients, but current treatment protocols often have low success rates.
The experimental treatment from researchers at Children’s National Hospital could open the door to more effective cancer treatments for children afflicted with deadly brain cancers. Dubbed tumor-associated antigen (TAA) T cell therapy, this experimental treatment has already gone through early-stage clinical trials with encouraging results.
Several pediatric cancer patients who went through the therapy have been declared cancer-free and have remained so years after being treated. Like traditional immunotherapy, this new form harnesses the body’s immune system to fight cancer, only in this case the therapy causes immune cells to attack specific proteins that drive brain tumor growth in children.
Specifically, the therapy collects functional T cells from the patient, targeting T cells that can recognize and attack certain proteins found in brain tumors. Researchers then multiply these T cells and inject them back into the patient’s body to hopefully trigger a hostile immune response against cancer cells.
Three of the children involved in the clinical trial had particularly aggressive forms of brain cancer that refused to respond to treatment years after consistent radiation, chemotherapy, and other cancer therapies.
However, these children exhibited overwhelmingly positive results after they received the new T-cell therapy and are still alive, well, and cancer-free two and a half years after receiving the treatment. In one of the patients, doctors found absolutely no sign of cancer, a testament to the treatment’s effectiveness.
Co-senior study author and Children’s National Hospital chief research officer Catherine Bollard says the study is an ‘important step’ in the development of pediatric T cell therapies that are more effective and safer than available treatments.
The therapy proved to be particularly effective at treating pediatric brain tumor patients who hadn’t responded to other treatments, were dealing with a recurrence, and generally had little hope of responding to conventional treatments.
In addition to addressing hard-to-treat pediatric cancers, the experimental immunotherapy could aid in treating brain cancers in both pediatric and adult patients by allowing physicians to target brain tumors without inadvertently damaging healthy neighboring cells.
Overall, the phase 1 clinical trial found the new treatment to be well tolerated, with just two patients recording notable tumor swelling and one with a particularly aggressive brain stem tumor passing away.
The experimental therapy still has to go through additional rounds of testing and clinical trials to address the risks involved, limit side effects, and determine safe dosage before it is deployed.
Other novel therapies indicated for brain cancers in pediatric and adult patients are also undergoing refinement and clinical testing by teams at CNS Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ: CNSP) and other firms. The outcomes of these R&D programs could revolutionize cancer care.
