Chinese Dealerships Reject 5-Year-Old EVs Over Battery Health Concerns

China’s EV market is facing a growing problem in the used-car industry, with many dealerships becoming reluctant to accept older electric vehicles. The main concern is not simply the age of the cars, but the condition and future cost of their batteries.

About 4-in-5 used vehicle dealers in the country reportedly refuse to take fully electric vehicles that exceed five years from their date of manufacture. Dealers are worried that older batteries may have lost significant capacity and could be expensive to replace. This has also made it harder to determine how much an older EV is actually worth.

The problem is already affecting resale prices. A three-year-old electric vehicle in China currently goes for around 45% of the price it had when new, compared with nearly 55% back in 2023. This shows how quickly some EVs are losing value as they move into the used-car market.

Battery health is at the center of the problem. Two electric cars can have the same age and mileage but very different battery conditions. How a vehicle has been driven and charged can affect how quickly its battery loses capacity. Frequent use of high-power fast charging and exposure to hot weather can increase battery wear.

Battery warranties also play an important role. Many manufacturers offer coverage for around 160,000 kilometers or eight years. As a car approaches the end of that period, buyers may become less willing to take the risk of owning it. A battery replacement can also be a major expense, making an older EV less attractive to both dealers and private buyers.

The issue is not that every five-year-old EV has a bad battery. Modern electric cars can retain much of their battery capacity for many years. The bigger challenge is knowing the actual condition of a specific battery before buying or selling the vehicle.

Battery testing could help address this problem. EVs can provide battery health information through diagnostic systems, while third-party services can also assess battery condition. In China, some buyers are increasingly asking for battery inspection reports before purchasing used EVs, encouraging dealerships to invest in testing equipment.

The concern could eventually spread beyond China. Chinese manufacturers exported more than 2.5 million EVs last year, meaning many of these vehicles will eventually enter foreign used-car markets. Countries with large numbers of imported Chinese EVs could face similar resale challenges as those cars become older.

For the used EV market to mature, buyers and dealers will need better ways to measure battery health and include it in vehicle prices. Without reliable information, the five-year mark could continue to be a major barrier for older electric cars.

Carmakers like Massimo Group (NASDAQ: MAMO) could also take the lead in making battery testing facilities readily available so that a used EV isn’t simply rejected because of its age. Rather, technical parameters like battery health reports should guide decision-making about resale value.
